The market, which is adjacent to the old market, is part of the Economic Stimulus Projects (ESP) that stalled in the last two years.

The traders argue that the space they are currently operating is small and did not have proper sanitary facilities.

“We had already given up after two years and with the government doing nothing. However, we have seen them build more stalls and repair the floors, an indication that the market will be completed soon,” said Benson Mbugua, a trader.

He added that the roofing of the market was complete.

Another trader, Josephine Wangari, said that the market’s opening was long overdue.

“Many people had to shut down their business as they were not allocated any space in the old open air market. We hope that they will reconsider reopening their businesses,” she added.

Area MCA Eunice Mureithi, also known as Mama Soko, cited that the new modern market would ensure that they traders do not suffer losses during the rainy seasons.

“We have had cases of goods being swept away by water. In some cases, customers have refrained from coming to the market due to the mud and hence this will be a better and cleaner place to shop,” she added.
