Hundreds of Manyatta residents in Kondele ward on Friday turned up to register for identity cards.
The initiative that was organized by Joachim Oketch, an aspiring ward representative in the 2017 general elections drew a large crowd.
The long day event was a clear pointer that several people still do not have the document that could lead them to register as voters for the coming polls.
Oketch said the challenge he has faced is with those residing in Manyatta but are drawn from the border areas of Busia and Nyatike.
He said the requirement is that such people go for vetting before they can be issued with ID.
“Many people were turned away because they come from the border and they must be vetted,” he said.
Speaking at Manyatta market where officials from the registration department pitched camp, Oketch said there was need to sustain the process.
He announced that he will sponsor such initiatives to target young people who turn 18 years for registration.
“I will be conducting this exercise twice in a month. I will ensure that every part of Kondele is covered so that nobody remains behind in acquiring an ID,” he said.
Oketch said voting Raila Odinga into office in 2017 needs a concerted effort of every leader to ensure more people are registered to vote.
One of the mobilizers, George Ochieng said many people are ignorant on the processes to follow to get an ID noting that it is easier to apply for the document if it is bought to the people.
“Our people want things done for them, they must know that an ID is for their benefit. They should stop this habit of only turning up to apply for IDs when it is brought to them, let them go look for this document,” he said.
