Environmental hygiene and nature conservation have for years remained at the core of the Uasin Gishu County.
In keeping up with this custom, hundreds of residents, community health volunteers and Uasin gishu county officials turned up for the cleanup exercise at Langas estate in an effort to eradicate diseases such as cholera.
The clean up exercise which coincided with the National youth service Ablution programme brought together residents who vowed to protect the environment.
Flagging off the cleanup on Thursday, CeC water, Energy, Environment and Natural resources, Mary Njogu emphasized the need to conserve the environment.
“We need to ensure that our environment is clean, because clean environment is a better life," said Njogu.
Njogu said that the residents should be responsible to ensure that garbage is thrown at respective place.
She encouraged those youths and women group who have dedicated their time to cleaning the estate twice a week.
Health executive Eunice Siria took the opportunity to show leadership and commitment towards creating a sustainable environment clean and safe for public use.
Siria warned those individuals who do not have sewerage systems and instead release affluent to the roads will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The area member of county assembly Francis Muya urged residents to keep their environment is clean.
Muya said that the exercise will be carried out county wide so as to sensitize residents the importance of living in a good and safe environment.
“We should ensure our eateries are clean so as to avoid cholera incidences as experienced in the neighbouring counties,” said Muya.
Ruth Malala, the village elder said that it was important for the youths to be engaged in such programmes so such to ensure responsibility in environmental conservation.
“Such practices make our youths responsible in protecting the environment and ensure good waste management in this county,” said Malala.
