Workers sub-location residents are calling on the area chief to resign, accusing him of abuse of office by swindling money from the elderly and other residents.
The locals have accused area Chief Chege Mungai of a myriad of corruption incidences, and are calling on the Nakuru County Commissioner Mohammed Birik to investigate the matter and take disciplinary measures on his junior employee.
Youth activist Hassan Karama claims his aging grandmother had failed to benefit from the Money Transfer programme for elderly people in the country, after she was allegedly short-changed by the chief.
“We have evidence that this money is released by the government from the County Commissioner’s office. Some people benefit fully while others get very little from what is expected. Yet others never get a penny. Some people are even asked to pay money to register as beneficiaries. Yet some of those who benefit do not qualify. This must be investigated by the government,” said Karama.
According to Karama, who was addressing a group of residents at Mariakani business centre Wednesday morning, records at the chief’s office indicated that about 20 elderly people had registered as beneficiaries of the programme but no records of those who had benefited and the value were in store.
When contacted for comment on the allegations, the chief denied any knowledge of the allegations. He said that his work was to serve all residents.
He added that he cannot force the government to release money to people who do not qualify for the programme.
“My office registers them and forwards the names. I only give out what I am given. I do not have any control over who benefits or not. That is cheap propaganda,” said Mungai.
