Residents have appealed to the Mombasa County government to relocate the Kibarani dumpsite, as it has become a health hazard to both human and marine life.
Companies that operate in the area have also lamented over the heap of garbage, endless clouds of smoke billowing from the site, foul smell and numerous flies buzzing in the area.
Sam Odera, the Human Resource manager at Mitchell Cotts Freight Kenya Limited, a company that operates in the area, has called for the relocation of the dumpsite, saying it is affecting their business negatively.
"There is no difference between us and those working at the dumpsite. We only report to work because we have clients to serve," said Odera.
On his part, Livingstone Macharia, a matatu driver, complained of poor visibility on the route, which is brought about by clouds of smoke emanating from the site.
"Motorists have to drive at near zero speed at this area due to poor visibility," said Macharia.
They said the effects of the dump site need to be looked into as it has become an eye sore to tourists who use the route.
