Addressing the press in Athi River town on Thursday, the area Maendeleo Ya Wanawake organization chairlady Angeline Mutethia said the region was prone to the outbreak during the ongoing heavy rains.

Mutethia said majority of the poor residents from the region especially the slum dwellers were living under filthy conditions.

She said the areas where residents were more vulnerable to the disease in case of outbreak include Bondeni, Kisumu Ndogo, Bondeni, Kasuitu, City Carton, Jua Kali, Sofia and Kanaani slums all in Athi River town.

Mutethia disclosed that most of the slums had poor drainages with no septic tanks at all arguing that storm water mix with solid wastes whenever there were rain falls.

She said the situation exposed health risks to the residents especially among the under five children who she said play in the confiscated waters.

The women leader noted that there were no proper toilets in the slums arguing the few were flying toilets that had made the areas unhygienic.

She called on relevant authorities from both national and Machakos government to intervene into the matter before disaster strikes.
