Kibera residents have been advised to register themselves as members in the NHIF scheme to enable them get free medication once they fall sick.

According to Isaiah Nyakang’i, an NHIF officer, the scheme helps people to get free health care and is very convenient. He said that deaths have risen because residents do not have money to pay for medication. He advised that once one is registered as a member, he or she receives free medication for their family as well.

“Maternal deaths will reduce if residents join the scheme for free medication once they fall sick. These days health care centres accept NHIF cards as modes of payments, residents who will not afford the money for medication will have treatment only if they are members,” he said.

“Medication has been made easy for residents. I am sure if all residents register to the scheme death rates will be reduced since medication will be affordable. I urge residents in Kibera to register in large numbers in the NHIF scheme for a better health. The government should also come in and help people register into the scheme,” he concluded.
