Kiambu Sub-county district education officer D.N Kariuki has urged the public to acquire education that will enable them to catch up with the advancing technological world.

“All developed countries have invested in education which has enabled them to have powerful economies,” Kariuki emphasised.

He mentioned that countries like Japan which have compulsory education is stable and highly productive.

“To reduce illiteracy, Kiambu County has adult education centres which cater for older people who never went to school. To fight illiteracy, we have to welcome books,” Kariuki explained

Nicholas Kidwaro is the chairman of Nawiri education centre within Kiambu Sub-county which is currently serving 60 women and 26 men. The institution remains vibrant thus giving the old men and women a chance to develop themselves through education.

“Men are fewer because of their attitude towards education. Also, the proximity to Nairobi prompts them to business,” said Kidwaro.

Adult education is pinned down by absenteeism of students due to family obligations and fee problems.

Jennifer Njeri, a student at the institution explained the cause of absenteeism.

“I have children at home and also work to provide for my family. I miss school most of the time,” expressed Njeri.

Kidwaro has called upon the members of the public to embrace education and for other members to chip in and support adult education.
