Kisii residents have been urged to stop charcoal burning to prevent destroying indigenous trees in the county.
Speaking to the residents, Iyabe sub county environmental officer Julius Makario said the business will have a negative impact on the residents.
Makario warned those who will be found cutting trees for charcoal saying that they will be prosecuted. He added that the Kisii County government is looking forward to conserving the environment for posterity.
“The county is trying to conserve trees so that we do not face unexpected climate change. All the residents are urged not to cut trees carelessly and to stop the charcoal business which is the main cause why trees and natural forests are being destroyed,” said Makario.
Makario revealed that the county assembly is preparing an environmental bill meant to curb deforestation and keep the environment clean.
“We are currently preparing a bill which will help the county government to punish those destroying our environment,” said Makario.
He added that the bill will help the county restore its beauty and avoid a drastic climate change effects which can affect both the residents and the business community.
