Kisumu County residents have been urged to use toilets for long and short calls, as a measure towards environmental conservation.
Speaking during the marking of the World Toilet Day at the Korando primary school in Nyando district on Wednesday, area public health officer Nicholas Makhoti said locals must stop going for calls in bushes.
He said every homestead in the county must strive towards having a toilet, to prevent spread of diseases caused by poor sanitation.
Makhoti said that due to extensive sensitisation, most local people, especially in Nyando district now have toilets or pit latrines.
“When I made a spot check, I found out that everybody has a latrine. Yes, the latrines may not be up to the World Health Organization Standards but it is better than having none,” said the health officer.
He said they have launched what they are calling sanitation marketing, where communities can access better materials for their toilets at a cheaper price.
The World toilet day was founded by the World Toilet Organization in 2001.
