Motorists and pedestrians in Mombasa County have been urged to use pedestrian crossings carefully to enhance safety on roads.
Coast Region traffic enforcement officer Emmanuel Okanda said the county government has put up pedestrian crossing signs which are supposed to be used by pedestrians to cross the road.
Mr Okanda said pedestrians should observe the laid down rules of crossing at the pedestrian crossing, warning them against crossing roads at un-designated areas.
According to Baraka FM, the traffic officer said most drivers are not willing to stop when pedestrians cross roads in un-designated areas, to avoid congestion of vehicles.
He said cases of pedestrians being knocked down by motorists in the county are on the rise, as some of the road users do not look if there is an oncoming vehicle before they cross the road.
“If the vehicles have to stop every time a pedestrian wants to cross, then there will be congestion and it is our job to ensure free flow of traffic,” said Mr Okanda.
The traffic officer noted that cases of accidents will reduce if all road users adhere to traffic regulations.
