They said that this would enable them to distinguish between criminals and real conductors. They cited that majority of the gangsters and vigilante groups in the area hid in bus parks pretending to be touts.

“They normally are in charge of the gangs and control the criminal activities in this place. The certificates would enable us to check if they have any criminal records,” said Esther Njeri.

She cited that many are used to block major highways while demanding for money from the touts. Peter Njogu argued that it should be a basic requirement for all saccos to demand for their certificates.

“Any other job in the county expects you to provide it as a requirement. Why should they be an exception?” Njogu said.

Eliab Njoroge cited that there was also need for them to be taught customer care skills claiming that most were rude to their customers.

“It’s unfair that they can call people names and intimidate us as their customers. They should learn to treat us well. In fact they have had a habit of throwing out people in the middle of the road which is not right,” Njoroge said.
