The residents claimed that many of the matatus were full of pests which posed a great danger to their health.

Speaking at the Main Bus terminus, passengers claimed that there were many fleas, lice and ticks in the vehicles.

“We have been experiencing cases of being bitten by bed bugs especially in buses. Many hide under the seats and one only feels the pinch while traveling,” said John Gitonga, a resident

Another passenger said that the buses had very poor sanitary conditions.

“Many of them smell horribly and are often not cleaned. In some cases, one finds rotting peels of fruits inside the vehicles which   creates a great discomfort.  We also have had to travel in vehicles which had carried fish or goats and hence the smell is horrible,” he added

The residents now want the Matatu Owners Association to spearhead the cleaning of all public service vans

“We use this vehicles daily and its unfair for them to expose us to conditions that put as at health risk. We are also calling on the ministry of public health to help in arresting and prosecuting all vehicles that do not uphold hygiene,” said Ashley Mureithi, another passenger.
