Residents of Kaptwembwa area in Shabab want the ministry of public health to scrutinize Posho mills in the area.
The residents raised concern that the quality of the flour that was being made in the facilities was questionable.
"We suspect that we are given milled flour from already spoilt maize because in some cases it is bitter. We also have had cases of a discolored maize flour and hence we suspect the maize is not of good quality," said Steve Maina, a resident.
Maina expressed fears that the milled flour could also contain pesticides from last year’s harvest. Another resident Joseph Mureithi said that they suspected the milled maize was not mature enough for milling.
"Even when it is cooked it has always tasted funny. We fear that the maize disease that affected our crops could have been transferred to our posho mills and hence pose a serious problem to our children,” Mureithi said.
Nakuru county public health officer Samuel King’ori said that they would investigate the issue.
"We normally carry out surveys to ensure that the quality of food that is distributed to our residents is okay. We will hence start our investigations immediately and shut down any establishment that does not reach the public health requirements,” King'ori said.
