Kisii County commissioner Godfrey Kigochi has warned Kisii County residents that anyone found cutting trees will be arrested and taken to court.
Kigochi speaking on Thursday during a tree planting exercise at Getare River Gesusu ward said police officers will not allow anyone to cut trees without getting official permission from environment officers.
“It is our responsibility to keep the environment clean and ensure trees planted in farms are environmentally friendly. Residents are advised to plant more trees especially during this rainy season to increase the forest cover,” he said.
The commissioner added that charcoal burning and selling should be stopped because no cutting of trees is allowed.
“Since the government banned logging in forests and charcoal burning, traders selling charcoals should look for alternative businesses before we catch up with them to tell us who are selling charcoal to them. Through this we will be able to get those cutting trees illegally in farms, bushes, and forests,” he noted.
Kigochi challenged professionals in Kisii region to educate locals on the need to conserve the environment by planting more trees.
