Itumbe residents have been advised to observe cleanliness in the growing trading centre.
The centre is being faced by hygiene issues since its location makes it a busy hub connecting Kisii and Ogembo towns. The centre has hundreds of residents running small businesses.
Speaking to this writer, Harun Oigo, the public health officer in Sameta Sub County said that people have been given notices to observe cleanliness but they have failed to adhere.
“Discharging waste water to public drainage is prohibited in the public health act. Such discharge is offensive and should be avoided,” said Oigo.
He added: “We have ordered residents to curb the movement of their animals which loiter around the town. The animals are a challenge to cleanliness in the town. We have imposed heavy fines for those found dirtying the environment.”
One of the traders who introduced herself as Shiko said waste water is a challenge to most small businesses in the area. She said that the laws should be fully adhered to ensure the trading centre is clean.
