Residents of Katine and Ngomeni villages in Matungulu , Machakos County have been urged to be vigilant due to stray hyenas roaming the areas.
Katine sub chief Timothy Musau said the hyenas which are on the loose can strike anytime when the residents are unawares.
Musau spoke at a public baraza in Ngolemi Catholic Church in Tala on Wednesday.
"Locals should guard their livestock and children so as to avoid being attacked by the beasts," Musau said.
He said the hyenas could be laying low since they were spotted waiting to attack when dust cools down.
"Don't think the wildlife went away, they could be waiting for the dust to settle before making attacks," Musau said.
The administrator said the hyenas broke out of their caves after heavy rains pondered the sub county making flood waters get its way into the animals caves.
Musau told the residents to construct strong structures which can accommodate their livestock to protect them from the hyenas.
He said the animals had devoured three sheep and attacked a calf.
