Residents of White House estate in Nakuru town have raised the alarm over a con woman targeting families in need of housemaids. According to sources, the middle-aged woman has been swindling money from unsuspecting families in the estate in pretext that she can ferry house girls from her rural home in Kakamega County. Anne Mukami, a beauty shop operator at White House business centre, told HiviSasa.com that she was introduced to the woman by a neighbour who told her she could assist in getting a good housemaid from western Kenya. According to Mukami, the woman asked for Sh2,000 for transport to travel to western Kenya and after two days, she called to request for more money to facilitate transport for the maid she claimed was available. “I sent her another Sh2000 hoping my desperate wait for a house girl would end. But I have never heard a word from the woman since. It is now two months. I hear the woman is seen in local drinking joints but she does not pick my calls,” said Mukami. Another victim of the con woman is James Okwemba, a tutor at the Kenya Industrial Training College. He said the woman conned his wife Sh5,000. Okwemba said her wife who had been on maternity leave was in urgent need for a house girl when she fell in the con woman’s trap last month. “This woman has been working as a freelance housemaid in this area for long and so many households know her as she has helped some secure assistants. But it seems she has discovered new ways of survival,” said Okwemba. Area sub-chief Michael Ngugi said investigations had started to apprehend the woman. He warned working mothers to be on the lookout for criminals posing as house girls or agents.
