Nakuru residents have welcomed the move to clean up the drainage systems in the county’s Central Business Districts.

Traders claim that the blockage of such drainage had often led to water stagnating which ended up becoming a menace.

Workers from the county department have been spotted removing dirt from the drainage and unclogging the sewers in selected places around the town.

According to Joseph Maina, a trader located near the Jamia Mosque, the stagnating water was often stinking and a good breed for mosquitoes.

“We often had to seek for alternatives into how the trenches were going to be cleaned. It was an expensive venture and with the onset of the El~Nino we feared it could get worse,” he added.

Peter Muchini pointed out that the mixing of the sewer water in the drainage was also a bigger menace.

“We are happy that the county is at least addressing the issue and we hope that they will create better culverts to help curb a repeat of the same,” he said.

They were speaking to the press in Nakuru town on Thursday where they challenged the county government to maintain the same standards.

Street Nakuru CBO Founder James Wakibia challenged the county to address the issue of the plastic menace saying it was responsible for the clogged drainage.

“The only way to combat the increased clogging in our systems is to completely ban plastics below 60 microns,” he added.
