Residents of Naivasha constituency have gladly welcomed the directive by the head of state to extend voter registration deadline till all eligible voters have been registered.
Speaking yesterday during a tour in Elburgon, in Molo Constituency, he president cited this as a democratic right for every citizen thus the need to add more time for the exercise. He further promised to allocate more funds to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to enable smooth continuation of the exercise.
“We are happy to have the deadline extended because there were still many eligible voters who had been locked out of registration owing to the busy schedules and the limited time that had been allocated for the exercise. I personally travelled home on the deadline date seeking to register but I was unable to. It is the first thing I will do tomorrow,” Alice Wacera, a resident, said.
Anthony Mwaura from Longonot commended the government for the same, adding that higher numbers of voters might be registered during this extension period.
“We are hopeful that our people will continue coming out in large numbers and take advantage of the extended deadline to ensure that no one eligible voter is denied their democratic right in the most awaited general elections next year,” Mwaura said.
The month-long registration exercise which momentarily ended on Tuesday registered about 900,000 new voters hugely lower than the projected 4 million voters.
