More than 2,000 retirees are yet to receive pension arrears owed to them one year after the high court ordered the treasury to fix their multi-billion-shillings claims.
The pensioners from Barclays Bank, Postbank, Postal Corporation of Kenya, National Bank of Kenya, National Museums of Kenya and the Kenya Airports Authority are claiming Sh 4.36 billion pension arrears.
Former Telkom Kenya workers who are among the ex-workers are seeking more than Sh1.2 billion, Telposta pensioners over Sh1 billion while Kenya Commercial Bank retirees are demanding more than Sh600 million.
Those from National Bank are seeking over Sh300 million while Cooperative Bank is required to pay Sh260 million. Other pensioners are from Barclays Bank, Postbank, Postal Corporation of Kenya, National Museums of Kenya and the Kenya Airports Authority.
High Court judge Mumbi Ngugi ordered National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich and RBA chief executive Edward Odundo to act and solve the stalemate. She also directed the AG to advise Rotich what was expected of him.
Retirees drawn from Nakuru who spoke to this writer revealed that they had not been paid the amount owed to them even after the directive by the court.
“The high court had ordered, Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich to appoint a tribunal to determine the stand-off,why should we suffer yet it is our money,” said Mathews Maritim, a former employee of Postbank.
He added: “Our families are living poor lives even after serving this country in our respective capacities.”
The former employees first lodged their claim before the Retirement Benefits Authority (RBA).
