Parents of the expansive Garissa County have been encouraged to stay away from backward cultural practices that hurt education.
According to Windle Trust project coordinator Mr Ali Duale, education standards in the county is yet to reach national standards, a fact that he attributed to retrogressive cultures like female genital mutilation (FGM) and early marriages.
“We urgently need to support our young scholars to do well in their examinations, especially those in marginalized localities. This can only be achieved by ensuring we keep our children in school,” he said.
Duale further said there is need to encourage girls to enroll in professions as teaching and nursing, which have a direct impact on the community's development.
The Windle Trust coordinator spoke during a two-day scholarship conference organized by his organization in conjunction with the World University Service of Canada.
