Details of President Uhuru Kenyatta's phone call to Kanu Party leader Gideon Moi have emerged.
The Star reports that the President phoned the Baringo senator to urge him not to join the opposition's National Super Alliance (Nasa).
A source close to the Moi family revealed that Uhuru asked Gideon to back his re-election in next year's general election, saying "his interests and those of his family were well taken care off in Jubilee, and not in NASA."
Although the source did not reveal Gideon's response, the call is believed to have informed his decision to walk away from the deputy president deal he had been offered in the alliance.
Last week, Gideon said the party will keep an agreement it signed with the Jubilee government after the 2013 polls, adding that Kanu is not willing to join another alliance ahead of the 2017 elections.
"We have not entered a new coalition. Kanu respects its obligations and until the expiry of the agreement, we are not in a hurry to get into another political agreement. As far as I am concerned, Kanu will honour the existing pact for now," he said.
The National Super Alliance, which is being spearheaded by Amani National Congress (ANC) Party leader Musalia Mudavadi, seeks to unite all opposition parties in a bid to unseat Uhuru in 2017.
