While Raila has openly distanced himself from 2022 presidential elections, his allies have however remained defiant that he must be part of the race.

"I want to assure you that Raila must be in ballot. There is no negotiations about that," said James Orengo in a past event.

And at the moment, a petition by Wajir businessman Mohammed Mohammud is at preliminary stages and if passed, a presidential candidate past 70 years will automatically be barred.

Led by Kisumu senator Fred Ouda, the leaders accused Ruto of using backdoor to frustrate his competitors.

"We have been discussing this in many of our meetings but it defies sense to us. It is basically blackmail by Ruto," he said.

Kisumu Women Rep Rosa Buyu said: "We can only limit the duration one can stay in power to avoid sustaining autocratic regimes. These other things are sideshows by Ruto."

In recent weeks, Ruto and Raila have been embroiled in fist fights with the latter calling for constitutional changes which would see imperial presidency scrapped off.

Should Mohammud's petition sail through in parliament, it will however not subject Kenyans to a referendum contrary to Raila's move.
