Former Lands Cabinet Secretary Charity Ngilu defeating incumbent Kitui Governor Dr. Julius Malombe came as a shock to many Kenyans but not to her supporters and advisors.
Ngilu defied all odds to win the seat following a tough contest. Malombe could not put up a strong fight that could outshine the newly elected governor even after he was endorsed by Wiper Party leader Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka.
According to Campbell Munyambu, a Wiper member who threw his lot with Governor Malombe, Ngilu appeared like she strongly supported Kalonzo to become the deputy President while at the same time drumming up support for NASA in the region.
The lawmaker spared her time not to trade barbs with Malombe because she knew the end result would not favor her.
She also got a chunk of mileage by appearing to support Kalonzo and NASA in her campaigns,” he said, as quoted by Star.
During her campaigns, Ngilu promised to change the lives of the residents if elected. The lawmaker has pledged to address different areas of the economy including water, health, women empowerment and security among others during the next five years of her leadership.
