Lawyers representing NASA coalition activist Miguna Miguna escaped death by a whisker on Wednesday night, as they tried to access the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Lawyers Nelson Havi, Cliff Ombeta, James Orengo and Julie Soweto were at the airport to serve court orders to immigration officers that Miguna who had been detained since Monday, March 26, should be released to appear in court on Thursday, March 29.
However, Havi confirmed that the police almost ran them over by a truck. They were roughed up and ejected from the airport.
"We read out the order to the policemen, who called for reinforcement and attempted to run us over with a truck, assaulted us forcing us to flee for safety," he said.
Havi also said they (government) had deported their client against his will and against the court orders.
"Jambo. We escaped from the airport and are all safe: Orengo, Ombeta, Soweto and I. However, we think they are deporting Miguna Miguna again."
Miguna was being detained in a toilet at JKIA's Terminal 2 after he arrived from Canada where he had been deported on February 6.
Havi said "heavily armed policemen cordoned off the entrance to JKIA-Terminal 2, to prevent James Orengo, Cliff Ombeta, Julie Soweto and I from serving the Order by Justice Odunga and seeing Miguna Miguna."
