Members of the closely-knit Sonko inner circle, speaking on condition of anonymity, have revealed the dramatic chain of events that led to the acrimonious and very public fall out between Governor Sonko and his deputy Polycarp Igathe. They paint a telling picture of a domineering Governor keen on imposing his will on his deputy even if it means threatening physical violence. While the two had projected a good working relationship between themselves to the public and the media, the behind-the-scenes reality was different, with the flamboyant governor subjecting his deputy to demeaning abuses, even threatening to give him some hot slaps.Insiders say that Polycarp Igathe had demonstrated a willingness to accommodate differences between them but he could not put up with being treated as a kid.
''The governor has been living with suspicion of his deputy. It is this insecurity that has seen him subject Igathe to humiliating abuses. I remember him calling hurling insults at Igathe after he took too long to join him at a meeting. I am scarcely surprised that he finally decided to call it quits,'' an insider says.
The poor working relationship between the two was brought to the public eye after Igathe tendered his resignation citing lack of trust and unending frustrations fro Governor Sonko.
Efforts within Jubilee have been initiated to try to bridge the differences that exist.
