Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) Kidney specialist Dr. Phillip Cheptinga has revealed that over 6,000 women die annually across the globe due to kidney-related problems.
Dr. Cheptinga who spoke as the world marks International Women's Day further said men are also among those with the highest risk of succumbing to kidney problems.
Speaking in Eldoret town on Thursday, Dr. Cheptinga expressed concerns over the worrying statistics.
He said women are the most affected due to their use of birth controls which affect their blood pressure.
"The highest percentage of people affected are women leading with 14%, followed by men 12% and children recording 6%," said Dr. Cheptinga.
"Children are affected due to their low immunity and their undeveloped body parts," he added.
The Kidney specialist advised Kenyans to always go for regular medical checkups to reduce the risks that come with kidney problems.
"Ensure you check your blood pressure, urine and weight as regularly as possible. its free for everyone in any public health facility," he said.
