Most universities have become creative ensuring that their students do not waste a lot of time despite the strike.

Despite the lecturers having to stand in solidarity with their fellow lecturers, some have devised ways of helping the students.

This is what is happening in some of the varsities in Garissa.

Take away assignments-Some lecturers issue their students with takeaway assignments which are submitted through their class representatives.

This way, interruption of learning is limited.

Research-some lecturers give their students task to research on different topics and subjects.

The time that they will be on the session and they were supposed to conduct research will be utilized for class work.

Some of them attend classes as from 6 pm in the evening. It is unlikely that their fellow lecturers will check in at this time.

Others offer private classes knowing that when the strike ends the time lost will never be recovered.

Industrial attachment-some lecturers have sent their students out on attachment this way killing two birds with one stone.

Instead of wasting time and the same time for the students, they are able to accomplish another task while at the same time standing in solidarity with their colleagues.

A don at one of the varsities in the region who opted for anonymity noted that it is the lecturers who are the biggest losers in the lecturers strike and not the students.

“Actually students don’t like attending classes and at the same time, our calendar is in such a way that it will allow the students to graduate every year.

This means we will be forced to do extra work when the strike is called off and at the same time we are the busiest.

Most of us will have a tough time when we resume.

That is the reason I conduct some private classes to save on the workload,” noted the Varsity don.
