There was drama after Mombasa Governor Hassan Ali Joho refused to produce his KCSE certificate when he appeared before IEBC officials for clearance on Thursday.
The Daily Nation reports that there was a 30 minutes standoff over the requirement that he produces the academic document.
Joho and IEBC Returning Officer Nancy Wanjiru were involved in an exchange of words over the issue.
Ms Wanjiru argued that was mandatory that one produces their Form Four certificate as a requirement for clearance process while the governor said it was not in the law.
“Please don’t try to introduce your own laws here. It is not written anywhere that a Form Four certificate is mandatory but (only) a university degree,” argued Joho, as reported by The Nation.
The IEBC official, however, insisted that Joho procudes the certificate.
“It is simple Joho, produce the certificate or we are stuck,” she insisted but the governor stood his ground, leading to a temporary delay in the process.
The ODM deputy party leader finally produced the KCSE certificate and was cleared amid jubilation from his supporters.
Joho was accused of forging his KCSE certificate that he used to get admission at the University of Nairobi.
The allegedly forged certificate said Joho attained a C+.
The governor, however, came out to say he scored a D- and was proud of the results.
