Former President Mwai Kibaki’s journey to lead this nation was not an easy one as many would think.
Kibaki did several odd jobs to earn a living. Details from the Ministry of ICT publication, the Kenya Yearbook, reveals that the retired president and former Othaya MP was once a bus conductor before he rose to become Kenya’s third President.
Kibaki worked for Othaya African Bus Union over the school holidays to make some money to cater for his needs.
The former Nyeri High and Mangu High schools' alumni, was a hard-working young man who did not let challenges stop him from achieving his dream.
Today, he has gone into the books of history for leading this nation for ten years.
"As a boy, Kibaki was expected to look after his father’s livestock, but a brother-in-law impressed it on his father to take him to school, where he turned out to be an exceptionally bright student," the Kenya Yearbook narrates.
The Makerere University graduate is known for his astute nature in the political scene.
"Kibaki has eschewed petty politics and controversy and has rightly been described as "the gentleman of Kenyan politics" ... But his detractors have interpreted the suave style as indifference," the Kenya Yearbook concludes.
