Already, an irked Ruto has smelled betrayal from President Uhuru Kenyatta's camp, thus coming out strongly to condemn attempts to amend the constitution.

"I will not allow any discussions about changing the constitution. Those who think we shall go to referendum to create positions for them are mislead," he said.

But highly placed sources within Raila Odinga's ODM contends that the former premier is keen to push for constitutional amendments that would scrap off imperial presidency in 2022.

Interestingly, President Uhuru Kenyatta is said to be backing the changes albeit secretly, a reason why he buried hatchet with Raila.

"What I can assure you is that we shall amend the constitution for the better of this country. Having imperial presidency is the reason behind post election violence," said Edwin Sifuna in ODM Youth League group.

An ODM official who declined to be mentioned said: "Of course ODM will team up with other like minded parties to ensure we sail in referendum. I can assure you many people now want the parliamentary system."

Further, the official says, should the planned referendum fail to materialise, Raila is keen to back a candidate to rival Ruto in 2022 polls.

Last week, Tiaty MP William Kamket was optimistic that plans are in place to have Raila back Gideon Moi, who hails from Rift Valley, a move that has caused jitters within Ruto's camp.

"I can assure you that plans are in place for Raila to back Gideon Moi. That one is an assurance from me," he said.

The DP is said to be agitated with introduction of powerful PM post, which would go to a party leader with largest number of seats in parliament.
