Sources within the Jubilee coalition have disclosed that Deputy President William Ruto is the man behind the push to make Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa the next Nairobi governor.
The sources have revealed that two months ago Ruto met with a section of Nairobi MCA affiliated to Jubilee. The core agenda was to drum up support for Wamalwa.
Those in attendance during the private meeting include Minority leader Patrick Ngaruiya, Minority whip and deputy Hashim Kamau and Micheal Wainaina respectively and MCA Millicent Mugadi.
The resolutions of the meeting were that the MCA's will start popularising Wamalwa before city residents before the official announcement of his political bid.
“The decision was taken in May in Ruto’s office and there is no going back on it,” one of the members present at the meeting told The Nation.
However, Wamalwa's anticipated bid has already stirred up conflict in the Jubilee coalition.
On Tuesday an agitated Starehe MP Maina Kamanda together with a section of Central Kenya MPs confronted DP Ruto demanding an explanation to why he endorsed 'an outsider'.
An MP present during the confrontation said the move could affect Ruto's political future after 2017.
“He was told that if this continues, the Kikuyus in Nairobi will consider their position, especially after next elections. He was also reminded that it is he who will need the community after the 2017 elections and not the other way round,” the politician said.
The DP has, however, denied being behind the Wamalwa drive.
Wamalwa has also not yet declared his intentions of contesting. Many are still unsure whether the CS will contest in Nairobi or Trans Nzoia.
