The recent return of a ruthless crime wave in Nairobi, especially in the CBD, is not a little man's joke.
The crime is a mastermind of heavyweight criminals who know the ways and maneuvers around the city as well as within the security corridors.
According to a local publication, the muggings in town are orchestrated by a seasoned criminal in real estate business.
The most lethal gang is called Tsunami and comprises 20 youths who are mostly footballers that have even graced the Kenya Premier League.
Their leader owns blocks of houses in Huruma and Mlango Kubwa which act as the control centre for the boys who move in groups of about 10.
They pounce at unsuspecting victims, their target being phones, laptops, ornaments, watches and other valuables.
The ringleader, am man in his mid-forties, always receives a share from the muggings by the fact that he is the one who established the gang and in extension owns it.
According to the Standard, the members of this gang are always bailed out by a Mathare politician whenever they are arrested in the crime.
"A Mathare constituency politician has on several occasions bailed them out of custody until he realised his folly. One gang member recently attempted to rob an anti-mugging police officer within the CBD but was overpowered and arrested," the publication says.
The gang is said to have moved to areas of Githurai, Juja, Ruai and Kayole after the recent crackdowns by police in the CBD.
