On October 15, 2016, Sonko shocked many Kenyans when he said he was the acting president after President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto left the country on official duty.

Sonko made the remarks at the burial of former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti, the late Prince Oduwale.

The governor left tongues wagging when he said, "I am the acting president of the Republic of Kenya if President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto are not around."

President Kenyatta later downplayed Sonko's statement by simply asserting that he is still the President even when he steps out of the country.

“I have only left my office and handed over the responsibility to my deputy on one occasion only. Even when I’m in Togo, I am still the President of Kenya,” Kenyatta said.

On September 12, 2016, Machozi hitmaker Bahati displaced President Kenyatta from his official seat and sat on it during a public function at Kasarani Stadium in Nairobi.

Bahati sang for the first lady his song Mama.

This act by the artist left many in shock.

The president's seat is only reserved for him and not even his wife.

"History Written. I 'Bahati' becomes the shortest serving President as President Uhuru 'vacates' his chair that I may sing the song Mama to Kenya's First Lady Margret Kenyatta! Glory to Jesus," Bahati later posted on social media.
