According to former Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama, there was a MoU in which Uhuru supported that Kalonzo takes over the presidency after Kibaki's reign.

"We agreed that Kibaki and PNU would not field a presidential candidate. This was an issue that even President Uhuru Kenyatta fully supported. He supported the idea of Kalonzo succeeding Kibaki,” Muthama said.

Muthama revealed that the country was experiencing bloodshed after the disputed election and Kalonzo was considered the man to save the people.

He also notes that Kibaki considered it wise to have Kalonzo join his team.

"The country was experiencing bloodshed and Kibaki needed to strengthen his position. He was the President but ODM had more MPs. He needed Kalonzo to balance the equation," Muthama added.

Kalonzo has since said he is ready to contest for the second time.

The Former Vice President had hinted at being named National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential candidate but the leaders settled on Raila.

Raila had promised to back another candidate during the 2022 election.

It is, however, unclear whether Raila will honor his promise.
