Plans are in store to provide rail transport from Standard Gauge Railway's Miritini Terminus to Mombasa CBD.
The Kenya Railway Cooperation said they are aware of the hustle that commuters using Madaraka Express go through to arrive in Mombasa CBD from Nairobi and vice versa.
Responding to a question raised by a Kenyan, Chege Muikamba J, the Cooperation said they would introduce a commuter rail link.
"The major problem is distance between Miritini and Mombasa.... We need commuter train," said Chege, following an announcement that Madaraka Express fares would increase for the economy class starting May 1.
In response, Kenya Railways said: "We plan to introduce this. The plans are still at an early stage but we will link Mombasa Terminus to Mombasa CBD via the commuter rail link."
Commuters from Nairobi CBD also lament that the distance to Nairobi Terminus in Syokimau is too long and costly.
