Mombasa County has been witnessing a steady rise of a juvenile gang famously known as 'Wakalikwanza'.
According to Francis Ouma, a human rights activist and a member of Haki Africa group, corruption is the major reason behind the upsurge of the killer group.
Speaking to a local media house on Friday, the activist said that there is a return of the gang based in the informal settlements of Likioni, Mishomoroni, and Kisauni.
These areas are considered hardly hit by high rates of unemployment and poverty'
"To be sure with what is happening in Mombasa just find yourself in Kisauni or Likoni anytime in the evening or early in the morning. There are many gangs especially juvenile gangs." Mr. Ouma asked a reporter.
According to the activist, these gangs are made up of boys who are drug addicts and have become idle since the end of electioneering period.
Many of the members are school drop out and cant fed themselves well, therefore, they have resorted to attacking, stealing and robbing residents to survive.
"Many were recruit by politicians now there is no politics anymore. Many of them are school dropouts so they are just idle and using drugs," the Haki Africa enforcement officer said.
According to Mr. Ouma, police have become reluctant and no longer proactive in fighting the criminals.
Police efforts to help flush out the group are affected by the rate at which money is changing hands between the police and the relatives of the individual criminals.
Corrupt police officers are taking bribes and releasing these culprits who once out, go ahead to kill locals in a bid to revenge.
The local community has hence lost trust and faith in police thereby taking the law into their hands by lynching these criminals.
"They are attacking people with impunity, the community has lost trust and confidence with the criminal and injustice actors now they are burning them," Mr. Ouma Added.
