In February 1990, a witness told TJRC, Moi felt betrayed by the then powerful Foreign Affairs Minister Robert Ouko when they visited the US along with a delegation of 84 other people.

And because the function was private, American president George Herbert Bush had not intended to meet any foreign delegation.

"Due to his influence, Ouko met human rights group in White House and even secured an appointment with the president," a witness said.

Upon hearing of the secret meeting, Moi and his confidant Nicholas Biwott are said to have reprimanded Ouko over the issue.

But a terrified Ouko quuickly organised with White House staff and managed to secure an appointment for his boss, Moi.

"When they finally saw Bush, a visibly angry Moi,  slapped Ouko in front of his host and accused him of betrayal. This did not impress Bush though," said another witness.

Two weeks later, Ouko, who had now fallen out with Moi, was kidnapped from his Koru home and killed in cold blood in one of Kenya's high profile murder that is yet to be resolved.

Subsequent inquiry commissions have indicated that Ouko was killed in Nakuru State lounge following instructions from 'above'.
