Deputy President William Ruto is closely monitoring the Machakos politics following the nullification of Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua’s election by the appellant court three weeks ago.
According to confidential sources, DP Ruto is keen on the direction the Machakos County politics will take if Mutua’s appeal is upheld or dismissed by the Supreme Court.
The Deputy President who is eyeing the 2022 presidential seat is said to be contemplating backing former Kathiani MP Wavinya Ndeti should the county go to by-election.
Sources note that Ruto seeks to win Machakos and Ukambani support ahead of the 2022 general election.
According to political analyst Peter Ngure, Ruto could openly support Wavinya Ndeti as he seeks partnership with Kalonzo Musyoka in 2022.
“The Machakos politics is key to DP Ruto’s 2022 bid and he is likely to work with Kalonzo should the Supreme Court dismiss an appeal by Governor Alfred Mutua,” Ngure said.
Ngure spoke to this writer in an exclusive interview on Tuesday.
He said the recent political signs indicate a possible partnership between DP Ruto and Kalonzo Musyoka in 2022.
Ngure noted that DP Ruto needs Kalonzo for him to stand a higher chance of succeeding President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2022.
Sources indicate that DP Ruto and embattled Machakos governor are not in good political terms and that the deputy president may prefer working with Kalonzo.
Both Mutua and Kalonzo have also declared an interest in the 2022 presidential election.
Last week, Kalonzo was quoted saying he has waited for too long to be president and that this time he will not 'sacrifice' his political dream to anyone.
