A section of leaders in Garissa County have vowed to take legal action against KenGen for the recent floods experienced in the region.
Led by National Assembly Leader of Majority Aden Duale, and Garissa Governor Ali Korane, the leaders said they will sue KenGen over the spillage of water from the dam that caused flooding, and eventually displacement of hundreds of residents.
The Garissa Township MP said the matter will be discussed in parliament to ensure that somebody takes full responsibility for their actions.
“The flooding has resulted from KenGen releasing excess water downstream causing death and destruction to farms and properties including schools. We shall take legal action against KenGen and sue it over Sh5 billion for damages,” said Mr Duale.
Governor Korane on his part said the floods have displaced residents from their homes and destroyed crops as well as property worth millions of shillings.
“We will be seeking compensation from KenGen. We will not allow such destruction to happen in future. For now, all we are doing is to help our people the best way we can, including providing food rations, and other social amenities,” Korane said.
