Equity Wings to Fly programme organisers have explained why only a few numbers of students in Mombasa will get the coveted scholarships.

It has emerged that only 24 applicants will get scholarships to pursue secondary school education.

Equity Wings to Fly County selection board chairperson Margaret Wandario blamed the small number on lack of support from US government.

"USAID has not offered support this year. It is just Equity Bank and Mastercard who are sponsoring the programme," she said.

Last year, 45 applicants got scholarships to join high schools.

The reason for USAID to pull out from the programme has not been disclosed.

Wandario said some needy students with marks as high as 410 had missed the sponsorship.

"We left out many needy but bright children because of lack of funding," she said.

The official said eight students were selected from each of the regions in Mombasa county; Kisauni and Nyali, Likoni and Mvita and Changamwe.

"There were 118 applicants from Likoni and island and we shortlisted 60," Mwandiro said.

She spoke during the presentation of the scholarships at Equity Bank Moi Avenue branch in Mombasa on Friday.
