Retired Kenya Air Force officer, Maxwell Kivihya during his meeting with the Truth Justice and Reconciliation Commission recounted on what happened during the 1982 Raila's failed coup attempt.
He said among those who took part in the abortive coup was Senior private Ochuka, Lt. Mwamburi, Cpl. Odero and Cpl Oriwa among other key players. It is Snr. Private Ochuka who led junior officers in the failed coup.
According to the retired officer, Mr. Odinga used to meet Senior Private Hezekiah Ochuka at a house on Fourth Avenue Ngong Road in the city of Nairobi.
He said that the coup failed after some airmen at the Eastleigh and Nanyuki barracks who were aware of the plot took up arms in readiness to counter. Later on, airmen who were ordered by Cpl Odero to go to town and some to the Broadcasting house met their death by loyal Kenya Army men.
"Cpl Odero ordered men to go to town and wait for the next order, which had not come by the time loyal forces from the Kenya army caught up with them."A few airmen who had been taken to Broadcasting House were killed there by Kenya Army men," he recalled.
Mr. Kavinya also said that after the failed coup, all the Kenya Air Force men were rounded up and taken to Kamiti Maximum Prison where they were to be hanged.
The former prime minister was also later absolved for having participated in the failed coup. The order by the retired president to have Kenya Air Force men arrested led to locking up of various servicemen and officers at kamiti, King'ong'o and Shimo la Tewa prisons.
They had to go through torture in order to yield forced confessions."President Moi appointed brigadier Kibwana and major Musomba to conduct interrogations and torture," said Mr. Kivihya during his sitting before TJRC in 2011, Bungoma.
