There is another showdown looming in the country after teachers vowed to fight to the end to stop Education CS Fred Matiangi from revoking degrees offered them through the school-based study programme and pre-university courses.
According to the findings of a recent audit ordered by Matiang’i, there was found a deep-seated rot in the institutions of higher learning which has compromised the standards of education.
It showed that students that do not meet the minimum KCSE grade C+ ended up taking degree courses after taking P1 certificates, pre-university courses and bridging courses.
However, Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) on Tuesday protested against these intended revocations, warning that there would be dire consequences.
Knut secretary general Wilson Sossion together with Kuppet counterpart Akello Misori faulted the directive that bars P1 certificate holders from joining university degree programmes.
The two argue that any teacher who has gone through a two-year professional programme has the eligiblity to join university and added that no teacher's degree will be touched.
"Teachers have sacrificed their meagre pay to access higher education. We will not watch as their papers are revoked," Misori said.
"The ministry must stop sensational policies and politicising education. They should only bite what they can chew," added Misori.
Sossion said: "Do not attempt to recall teachers' degrees because they were awarded by senates and university councils."
