At least 300 students from Rhino Primary and Secondary schools in Mwariki Location, Gilgil Constituency demonstrated on Wednesday at the school's premises over land grabbing allegations.
Supposedly, a private developer has grabbed their playground.
The demonstrations halted learning at the schools for the better part of the day as students were later joined by members of teaching staff and parents in demanding the immediate arrest of the private developer for distracting the operations of the schools.
Speaking on the behalf of the school, Chief James Mwangi of Mwariki said that the school is a community based institution and the land on which it stands was donated by local community.
“We are appealing to the county to intervene to save the school from falling in the hands of grabbers. The school is a community institution built to bring education to locals,” said Mwangi.
The controversy pits the school and a private developer over the ownership of a 5.5 acre piece of land on which the school is built.
Joan Wanjiru, a parent at the school, said that they would not allow grabbers to take the land.
“This is a public facility and no one should have a claim of the land,” said Wanjiru.
Peter Kamau, another parent, said that they have dearly contributed for the growth of the school and warned the private developer to keep off.
“We built the school through harambees. Why should a developer grab it?” posed Kamau.
