Human rights group HAKI Africa has proposed the reduction of counties from 47 to 10 in a move to curb the huge wage bill.
HAKI Africa Chief Executive Officer Hussein Khalid said they have written to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) proposing the reduction of the number counties and constituencies.
Speaking on Wednesday in Mombasa town, Mr Khalid said the 10 counties should each have 12 members of parliament.
Mr Khalid further proposed that salaries for governors and MPs should also be reduced as currently MPs earn a monthly basic salary of about Sh740,000 with allowances while governors earn a monthly basic salary of Sh1.1 million.
The CEO said that MPs should each earn not more than Sh200,000 and that governors should not earn more than Sh300,000.
The lobby group has however proposed an increase in the number of special interest MPs from 120 to 150.
“Haki Africa is calling for Kenya to have less politicians in the country with a minimal pay and/or perks. The number of counties and constituencies should be reduced to curb the huge wage bill.”
“Another 30 MPs should be identified to present special interest groups thus bringing the total to 150 MPs,” said Khalid as quoted by Baraka FM.
