[Photo/Courtesy]A student who has been described as a heroine following a fire outbreak at Moi Girls School in Nairobi is dead.Mary Njengo, 14, is said to have woken up her colleagues and risked her life by helping them escape after she noticed smoke in their dormitory, Saturday at 2am. According to Njengo's aunt, Anne Emali, the school's matron informed her that students who survived the inferno were grateful to her for saving their lives.“The matron told us how our brave little girl tried everything within her powers to save her friends. She was waking them up and even went back to make sure everyone was out of the dorms,” said Emali, Monday as quoted by Standard.Unluckily, Njengo was trapped inside the burning dormitory. She had no option but to pass through to save her life. She was severely burnt and rushed to Nairobi Women's hospital.The former Mukuru Primary School student was in an isolated ICU ward after suffering 66 per cent burns.Nairobi Women’s Hospital Chief Executive Officer Felix Wanjala on Sunday had expressed optimism that Njengo would recover. However, that was never to be as she died from the injuries she sustained.Eight other students had earlier been reported dead following the incident.Her family has described her as a happy and bright girl.Kenyans took to social media to mourn her death with many describing her as a brave girl, a heroine and an angel.@Stevenjengah twitted, "It's sad we have lost the heroic young lady -Moi Girls Nrb ( Mary Njengo). A heroine indeed. Sincerest condolences."
