The Kibera slum has for long been considered as the dirtiest residential area in the city.

Any given time that the slum is mentioned, a filthy picture crosses the mind but time has now come for the slum dwellers to change this temporary mental image in favour of a rather new and refreshing reference.

One of the major factors that contribute to the continued degradation of Kibera's surrounding environment is the uncontrolled dumping of litter. It is a challenge that has been in existence since time in memorial but we should never accept to live with it.

Although we can have one or two of our fingers pointing at the Nairobi County government, a good number should point at us together with the former city council. The former administration failed to take proper urban planning initiatives, and this is why the residents of the largest slum in Africa live in devastating environments.

Nairobi Dam is in a pathetic condition courtesy of our negligence and ignorance. The water mass used to be a very good place to relax nearby as well as for newly weds. Look at its present state, it does not even attract the homeless street families to conduct their afternoon showers.

All we have to do is stand as the Kibera community and pull up our strengths to salvage and rehabilitate our environment.

Lost glory is not lost forever.
