Breast cancer has been identified as one of the killer diseases in Nakuru County.

Naivasha sub-county Medical Officer of Health Dr Ore Obiro revealed that out of the 180 patients screened for cancer in the last three years, 22 per cent tested positive for breast cancer.

This, he noted is closely followed by cervical cancer at 16 per cent and stomach cancer at 15 per cent, adding that esophagus and prostrate cancers were also detected in a few of the cases.

Speaking during program for palliative care on Sunday, Dr Obiro singled out, Biashara Ward in Naivasha East and Ndabibi as some of the areas with high cases of cancer.

He said the hospital has embarked on a three-month progressive screening exercise in all the wards in the sub county to create awareness about the disease.

''Screening of patients will be done on sight with focus on flower farms and particular wards that have been identified as lacking information on cancer."

At the same time, Dr Obiro pointed out that the palliative care support group was mooted out of concern that most of the people screened and found to be cancer positive could not be traced for follow ups.

The formation of support groups therefore has enable the hospital through its palliative care unit to easily trace patients.

The hospital medical superintended Dr Joseph Mburu said the institution was challenged in the following up cases of cancer because it lacked data on the same.
