Several families have been left homeless in Kisumu County following heavy torrential rains pounding the area for the last three days.
Kenya Red Cross Society coordinator in the area Emmanuel Owako said the flash flooding was not anticipated.
Owako said River Kajulu in the outskirts of Kisumu Town has, for the first time in history, broken its banks displacing more than 20 families.
He said most of the houses were destroyed while others were water logged and families had to be evacuated to safer grounds.
“We were not prepared for Kajulu flash floods and it has taken us by surprise but my team is already on the ground responding to the affected families,” he said.
The coordinator said the road network in the area has also been affected cutting transport to the affected areas.
Speaking in Kisumu, Owako said other areas prone to flash floods like Kolwa and Nyamasaria are also experiencing the same situation.
He announced that his team is on the ground carrying out assessment of the flood situation and as well responding by giving out some essential necessities.
Owako said he is reaching out to other partners in the region to help in donation to enable Red Cross to respond to the affected families.
“We are mobilising resources to be able to respond in time to the affected families and we are asking other partners in the region to come to our aid,” he said.
He reminded families living in low land areas to move to higher grounds as a measure to mitigate the effects of floods.
